People pay premium prices for things made with care
Unique handmade items command prices mass production simply can't reach.
Realistic earnings: £180–£550 per month — depending on how much time you can invest.

What you'll need
- Any crafting ability
- Basic product photography
- Simple packaging knowledge
What to make
Product ideas that sell reliably
- Jewellery — earrings and simple necklaces
- Candles and wax melts
- Soaps and bath products
- Original art and prints
- Knitted and crocheted accessories
- Small woodworking pieces and homeware
Price it properly
The single biggest mistake in handmade is pricing at cost plus a little. Use materials + the value of your time + profit. Worked example for a pair of earrings: £3.50 materials, 30 minutes at £12/hour = £6 of time, plus profit — you land around £18–20 retail, not £8.

| What | Details | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | Findings, beads, packaging | £4per unit |
| Your time | 30 minutes at a fair hourly rate | £6per unit |
| Profit and fees | Platform fees plus your margin | £9–£11per unit |
| Retail price | What the listing should actually say | £18–£20per unit |
Where to sell
- Etsy — best for discovery and search traffic
- Facebook Marketplace for local, fee-free sales
- Instagram Shopping for building a following around your work
- Local craft fairs and markets for volume and feedback
Product photography that sells
- Shoot in natural light near a window, never under a ceiling bulb
- Use a clean, plain background
- Include something for size reference
- Take multiple angles plus one lifestyle shot
Product listing template
[Product name] — [material] [item type] in [colour/style] Handmade in small batches in [your town]. • Materials: [list] • Size: [dimensions] • Care: [one line] [Two sentences on why you make these and who they're for.] Each piece is made to order and posted within [X] working days in recycled packaging.
Scaling strategy
- 1Start with one or two product types only.
- 2Chase reviews harder than sales for the first month.
- 3Expand the range based on what actually sells, not what you enjoy making.
- 4Add seasonal and personalised options — they carry the highest margins.
