Website Design

Build sites that turn visitors into customers

Small businesses need a website that actually brings in customers, but can't justify an agency's price tag or a full-time hire.

Realistic earnings: £400–£1,200 per month — once you've built a small base of repeat and referral clients.

What you'll need

  • A no-code builder (Wix, Squarespace, Framer or similar) or basic HTML/CSS
  • An eye for clean, simple layout
  • Basic copywriting — turning "what we do" into a clear pitch
  • Comfort briefing clients and managing revisions
  • A portfolio of 2–3 sites, even built for practice or for free

The opportunity

A local business — a tradesperson, a salon, a small shop — is either missing a website entirely or running one that's years out of date, doesn't work on mobile, or doesn't say what they actually do. They don't need a developer on retainer. They need one good site, built properly, and someone who'll keep it running.

Getting started

  1. 1Build a simple package: daily posts, story updates, comment management, hashtag research and a weekly report.
  2. 2Price a trial week first so the client risks almost nothing, then move them onto a monthly package.
  3. 3Scan local Facebook groups and business pages for accounts with under 500 followers or no posts in the last two weeks.
  4. 4Send the outreach message below to five businesses a day until someone says yes.
  5. 5Deliver the trial week brilliantly, then present the monthly package on day six.

What to charge

WhatPrice
Trial week£20–£30per one-off
Starter monthly package£80–£110per month
Full monthly package£120–£150per month

Raise your prices once you have three happy clients — not before.

Outreach message

Hi [Name],

I came across [Business] while looking for local [industry] businesses and had a proper look at your page. You've clearly got great [product/service] — the page just isn't showing it off yet.

I manage social media for small businesses locally, and I'd like to offer you a one-week trial for £25 so you can see what a difference consistent posting makes. I'll handle a week of posts, stories and replying to comments. No contract, and if you don't love it we shake hands and part ways.

Would you like me to start Monday?

Weekly delivery checklist

  • Plan next week's content on Friday (7 posts, 5 stories)
  • Source or shoot photos — client's own photos first, stock second
  • Write captions in the client's voice, not yours
  • Schedule everything so posting never depends on your mood
  • Reply to every comment and DM within 24 hours
  • Send a short Friday report: reach, new followers, top post

Scaling path

  1. 1Start with one client and over-deliver.
  2. 2Add one new client per week until you hit your capacity.
  3. 3After three successful clients, raise your prices for all new clients.
  4. 4Hand off scheduling to a virtual assistant once you pass five clients.
